Ranking Opportunity Index© USA 2026

Which Chambers USA ranking tables are the least crowded — across 930 ranking tables, 11,914 placements and the four submission waves of the 2027 cycle.

The index describes two structural properties of a ranking table that are often confused: how crowded each band is — and how the ranked firms are spread across the bands. The first bears on entering the table, the second on moving up within it. Both run on a scale from 15 to 92 and are comparable only within their own league: nationwide against nationwide, state against state.

Read this before you read the tables. The entry score measures crowding, not opportunity: it correlates at +0.72 (nationwide) and +0.75 (states) with the plain size of the table. Small tables almost inevitably have few firms per band. The promotion score is independent of size (+0.01 and +0.15) and is the more robust of the two. See “What this index does not say” below.

Strategy 1
Getting in
How many firms share a band? Fewer means less crowding around each place. It says nothing about how often a place actually opens up.
Strategy 2
Moving up
Are firms bunched at the bottom while the top has room? Measured by the average band, normalised to the number of bands. Independent of table size.
Strategy 3
Cross-practice
Where else are the firms in your table also ranked? Shows the practice areas that comparable firms tend to reach.
